Gillian Singer was born in Leeds. She was educated at Bradford, Sheffield and Chelsea School of Art where she completed an M.A. in Sculpture.
Her present work involves the use of grid formations and looks at the way mark, symbol and pattern can function as language in motion across a linear structure. Some of these pieces translate and enlarge cross-stitch diagrams. She removes the concept of stitching away from its usual decorative and passive association. It is precisely this association that fascinates Singer, by taking the craft and enlarging the concept out of all proportion these images become powerful coded diagrams with uncomfortable subject matter.
Singer is also designing floor and wall pieces. These architectural and sculptural systems will form new languages, full of graphic and symbolic iconography.
